I am taking a class on Children's Literature and we are assigned to read THIRTY PICTURE books! Some of my favorite are Arnie the Doughnut, A Bad Case of the Stripes, and I Love You the Purplest. What are some of your favorite picture books?

Do any of you have great plans for the fourth of July? Are there any great firework shows that you plan to attend here in Minnesota?

This weekend, I am traveling to Door County with my sister and my mom to celebrate my mom's 6o th birthday, and also my birthday which was last weekend. Next week, I am traveling to California, I plan to visit San Diego and Hollywood.

The World According to Humphrey!

What a great book! I sure wonder if animals can really talk......

Today, I read the World According to Humphrey. It was so entertaining that I finished it in one day! I liked the variety of characters within the classroom, and it was interesting how each student had thier own story, and Humphrey had a way with bringing out the best in everyone. It made me think of how important it is to really get to know someone and help others when you can. I would recommend this book to those that like quick reads, stories about animals and happy endings! I loved all the animal raising tips and fun facts at the end of the chapters. I LOVE- LOVE - LOVE this book. (Make sure to read the book to see what his means!)

I hope that Day #2 of summer was great....what have you all been up to?

What would your teachers recommend?

Check out what other favorite teachers at Countryside are recommending!

My favorite chapter book is The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane by Kate DiCamillo. It is an amazing book that takes you through the life of a toy rabbit. Edward journeys to the depths of the ocean, under a garbage dump, along a train ride with a hoboe and finally back to the shelf in a fancy toy store. It is a book for someone who loves to use their imagination and enjoys a good adventure! It was recommended to me by Mrs. Gross and I would STRONGLY recommend it to anyone. I read it to my class and they loved it!

Mrs. Davis

My favorite chapter book is Island of the Blue Dolphins.
I really like that it impowers girls and it is an adventure with a lot of cliffhangers.
People who like a lot suspense and adventure will like this book.

Mrs. McClure

One of my favorite chapter books is Anne of Green Gables written by Lucy Maud Montgomery. It is set in the beautiful area of Canada called Prince Edward Island. My daughter, Molly, and I had a wonderful time visiting the Island, Anne’s home and also the birthplace of Lucy Montgomery. I would recommend this book to girls who love to have dear, best friends. It is also a good account of adoption and how it is to feel part of a new family, especially when the “parents” are much older and have never had children around the home.
There is a lot of narrative, adventure and fun. The author’s descriptions make you feel like you are right there with Anne in the schoolroom or talking with her best friend, Diana. Anne is strong-willed and often gets into trouble because of her temper and desire to out-smart the boys! Enjoy the book before you watch the movie!!! You will enjoy both!
Mrs. Katie McCullough

My favorite chapter book is The Giver by Lois Lowery. I would recommend it to anyone who is beyond 5th grade and like science fiction, adventure, and mystery. This book really makes you think! This book won the Newberry Award in 1994. Given his lifetime assignment at the Ceremony of Twelve, Jonas becomes the receiver of memories shared by only one other in his community and discovers the terrible truth about the society in which he lives. Twelve-year-old Jonas lives in a seemingly ideal world. Not until he is given his life assignment as the Receiver does he begin to understand the dark secrets behind this fragile community. I have so many favorites!

Mr. DeYoung

I have recently discovered an old series of books that I read when I was in 5th or 6th grade. It is called “The Dark is Rising” sequence by Susan Cooper. There are 5 books in the set: Over Sea, Under Stone; The Dark Is Rising; Greenwitch; The Grey King; and Silver on the Tree. I read them all again during spring break and I was whisked away into a world of fantasy and danger, magic and adventure. There are two main character groups: Will Stanton and his wise teacher, and the three Drew children and their mysterious Uncle Merry who seems to weave in and out of all of their lives with his uncanny ability to know just when someone is in danger. These are classic stories about the struggle between the Light and the Dark—Good and Evil. Susan Cooper is an excellent story teller and, as soon as I finished one book, I picked up the next! I do have to say though, that sometimes the danger is intense and, even though I knew the outcome already, I found myself holding my breath and hoping that everything would turn out alright. I also had a few problems with pronunciation of some words because parts of the stories have some Welsh in them. Luckily, there is a description of the pronunciation in the book, The Grey King. I would recommend this story to anyone who likes “Harry Potter,” or other stories about magic, fantasy, and adventure.
Mrs. Prowell

Favorite chapter book is hands down Harry Potter. Why? Because it is so imaginative and engaging. It just pulls you into another world. Anyone who likes fantasy and or adventure. I know that everyone knows Harry Potter, but it is just the truth that it is my fav. We actually ordered 3 copies of it so that we don’t have to fight over it the first day it comes out.
Mr. Lundgren

Hey 5th Graders! My absolute favorite novel right now is Among the Hidden by Margaret Peterson Haddix and I highly recommend you read it. The reason I am recommending this book is because it is interesting, exciting, suspenseful, and really makes you think. The idea behind the book is that families are only allowed to have two children, but many have more and they become “shadow children” because they have to hide from the government. While reading this book, you have to think about who you think is right – the government or the “shadow children”. Each chapter ends as a cliff hanger so you don’t want to put the book down. The last reason I would recommend this books is because if you like it, there are 4 other books written afterwards, so it’s part of a series that you can continue to enjoy. If you like mystery/suspense books, you will LOVE Among the Hidden! Go get a copy from your nearest library or book store today. Happy Reading!

Weekend #1 Challenge

Students:

Here is your challenge for the weekend! I hope that you rise to the challenge!

Ask your parents about the best book that they have EVER read. On your blog posting, tell us the following: title, author, plot, where they first remember reading the book, and what made it so memorable.

Maybe this would be a book for you to read over the summer!

P.S. Remember to capitalize the letters in a title and for the author!
Happy Blogging!
